I stayed at Shanhao Hotel in Ning’er and had a mixed experience — the property has visual appeal and decent facilities, but several service, hygiene, and management issues significantly affected the stay.
The hotel itself is aesthetically pleasing. The large lobby makes a strong impression, and balconies decorated with plants and small garden-style trees give the building a distinctive character. The rooftop terrace garden is also attractive and relaxing. My room was spacious, comfortable, and stylish, with a nice view of the surrounding mountains. Directly in front of the hotel there is an undeveloped open lot mixed with small farms, which interrupts the immediate foreground but does not completely detract from the landscape.
Facilities were reasonable overall. The gym contains older equipment but enough for basic workouts. Laundry is available, complimentary tea and coffee are offered at reception, and handmade cakes can be purchased, even though the coffee machine was not maintained.
Service quality was inconsistent. At check-in I received a cold welcome with extensive questioning despite having an online booking, and I was not offered help with luggage while staff were visibly assisting another guest at the same time. Later interactions at reception were polite and professional, with some effort made to communicate in English.
Cleanliness issues were present from arrival. The toilet seat area contained visible dried urine residue and a ***** hair on the seat cover, indicating it had not been properly checked between guests. During the stay, housekeeping cleaned used cups by rinsing them in the room sink and rubbing them with fingers and water before putting them back. In addition, a housekeeping staff member physically grabbed and forced my girlfriend’s hand under a beverage machine while she was trying to use it independently, despite her protesting that she did not want assistance. This interaction felt inappropriate and overly forceful. Housekeeping staff also sometimes stared persistently in corridors, which created discomfort.
Management of shared spaces was weak. Guests smoked frequently in indoor areas including the lobby and breakfast room despite posted rules. Staff did not intervene beyond occasionally opening windows. Dining conditions were disorderly — queues were not respected and hygiene standards appeared poor — and I observed a guest scratching his backside before touching shared serving utensils. This contributed to my decision to eat outside despite meals being included.
The laundry room presented another issue: unattended machines were sometimes opened or interfered with by other guests, making it difficult to trust belongings left there.
Overall, the hotel has appealing architecture, pleasant views, comfortable rooms, and useful amenities. However, inconsistent cleanliness, uneven service treatment, lack of rule enforcement, and problematic housekeeping interactions substantially reduced the overall experience.
